Did You Know: May 22, 2014

On May 22, 1849, Abraham Lincoln, who was  12 years away from being the 16th President of the United States, was given Patent No. 6469 for a mechanism that lifted boats over shoals, i.e. a place where the sea, river, or other body of water is shallow. Basically, he wanted to make it so that boats didn’t get stuck on the strip of sand between two bodies of water like a beached whale.

Note: DON’T Google Image Beached Whales. It will make you really sad. Just a little science tidbit for you.

Although his device was never made, it solidified his place as the only President to ever have a patent.
